The 9x19mm Parabellum (abbreviated 9mm, 9x19mm, 9mm Luger, 9mm Para or 9x19) cartridge was designed by Georg Luger and introduced in 1902 by the German weapons manufacturer Deutsche Waffen und Munitionsfabriken (DWM) for their Luger semi-automatic pistol. For this reason, it is commonly called the 9mm Luger cartridge, differentiating it from the also-popular 9mm Makarov and 9mm Browning cartridges.
The 9x19 Parabellum was adopted by the German Army in 1908 as the cartridge for the famous Luger pistol. It has become the world's most popular pistol cartridge. It is now used by most of the militaries of the world, including all of the NATO countries, and also a great many police agencies. It is popular with civilians everywhere they are allowed to own handguns.
